What to say in conversation?

I have asperger's syndrome (a mild form of autism) so conversation is not one of my strong points. If I'm talking to a girl on the phone and I ask her "how was work?" and she replies "boring" or "busy." What are some good ways I can respond to that or some witty ways. Thanks
